You don't need to add 011 81 because you are actually dialing a US cell number roaming in Japan. Try dialing the number the way you do when your son is in the US. I've called from both a cell and a land line and both times got a recording that I've reached a non-working number.  Do I need to buy a calling card with a pin to use for calling Japan?
