On August 1, 2011 The Communications and Information Technologies Department of the Republic of Azerbaijan replaced all 3 digit geographic area codes with new 2 digit ones. Another two digits were added to the 5 digit local numbers. As a result, all telephone numbers in Azerbaijan are now 9 digit including area code. Mobile phone numbers have remained unchanged. Also area codes for the capital Baku, Sumgayit and Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic have remained the same (12, 18 and 36 respectively).
