Calling a Canada Only telephone # from the U.S.

    An organization has a toll free number which can only be dialed from within Canada. I am in the U.S. The number is 888-xxx-xxxx. Is there anyway for me to legally call this number from the U.S.? Can I somehow accept whatever charges calling this number would generate?

    Hi Gretna,
    First of all, the toll free number can only be called from within Canada because its owner has chosen this. They could choose to receive calls from the US if they wanted to.

    Some of this website's users have reported being able to dial a US toll free number from other countries by replacing the toll free prefix with another set of digits. In your case 888 would be replaced with 881. You would of course be charged regular rates for the call. You would dial 1881 xxx xxxx. Here's a page providing more information:
