Was able to call from US to an Afghan cell earlier this week but now I receive a message that “the country you are dialing cannot be reached by direct dial”. I dialed the operator and they just said to keep trying however I continue to receive the same message. What does it mean that it “cannot be reached by direct dialing”?

    Thank you for your time.

    Hello,

It means that you can only call Afghanistan through an operator. To reach the international operator in the US you must dial 01.

Regarding why you are getting this message – it’s unusual and you should be able to direct dial to Afghanistan. Have you tried using another phone line/service to dial this call?

Heads-up

Some information on these forums could be outdated - countries change their numbering plans periodically. We recommend using our top menu to double check the correct instructions for dialing to a specific country.
