The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced, in November 2023, an overhaul of its landline area code numbering system to be fully implemented on January 1, 2024. By adding 2 digits to all fixed numbers in the most populous African country, Nigeria’s numbering plan now has a more consistent scheme comprising 10 digits for both mobile and fixed phone numbers.
How landline numbers in Nigeria have changed
Digits 20 have been prepended to all geographical area codes*. Here are a few examples:
- Abuja — old phone number: 9 xxx xxxx; new phone number: 209 xxx xxxx
- Gombe — old phone number: 72 xxx xxx; new phone number: 2072 xxx xxx
- Lagos — old phone number: 1 xxx xxxx; new phone number: 201 xxx xxxx
*When dialing within Nigeria add the 0 (zero) national prefix. For example, to dial a Lagos landline use 0201 xxx xxxx.
