    Hi Al,

Not sure what you mean by texting from your laptop. It depends on the service you intend to use. The sequence for texting to a foreign country is the same one used for dialing a phone call. In the case of Ukraine it is: 011 380 followed by a 9 digit cell number which may not begin with zero (if it does you should leave out the zero). You can also use +380 instead of 011380 when using a cell phone to call/text. More info at:
    https://www.howtocallabroad.com/ukraine/

From the Ukraine to the USA: 00 1 xxx xxx xxxx or +1 xxx xxx xxxx. More info at:
    https://www.howtocallabroad.com/results.php?callfrom=ukraine&callto=united_states

If you are using an online based VoIP service follow their instructions. Normally, the sequence should be the same, but they could for instance ask what country you are texting to and only require you to enter the local number (without 011 and 380).

    I hope this helps.

    Hello,
Thanks for your inquiry. According to the page linked below you can’t dial internationally using your current Assist Wireless phone:

    Hello Rachel,

I have done some research and, indeed, there seems to be an issue with VoIP services in Qatar. Regular cell phone calls should be working however. I understand you’ve made sure your connection is good, but how about, just for a test, trying to place the call to your friend’s mobile using a different US carrier? Also, have you tried messaging each other via mobile?

    Hello Susie,
The number you have is a US toll free number. These are issued at a national level so there’s no area code. The USA’s country code is 1 so, to dial the number from Australia, you should enter the following: 0011 1 888-688-4760.

Note that toll free numbers are designed to be dialed nationally, therefore calling this number from outside the US might not work. If this is the case try the link below where the business you have been trying to contact provides additional regular contact numbers from their Canadian office (Canada uses country code 1 as well).

    https://www.bbb.org/us/ny/plattsburgh/profile/dating-services/mate-1-0041-57105393

Another option for calling an 888 US toll free number from abroad is to replace 888 with 881. More info here:
    https://www.howtocallabroad.com/qa/toll-free.html

    I hope this helps.

    Hello JRB,

Try the page below and look for the paragraph named: How to dial to Poland cellular – the same info applies to text messages (you may also replace 011 with the plus sign):

    Hello Happy girl,

I suppose the reason why there isn’t such a website is because, in order for such an application to work, one would need to enter a phone number in its standardized international format (beginning with the country code). Those who find it difficult to identify a phone number’s country of origin would likely enter whatever digits they have, often without the country code. In this case the application would not be able to identify the country, or would point to the wrong one.

In short, even though there might be such an application, especially a smart phone app, it would not always work.

If you have a complete phone number you can easily identify its country by checking a country code list. Our home page for instance has a feature titled “Reverse country code lookup” where you can choose a country code and see what country it belongs to, along with additional information about that specific country’s phone numbers (number of digits, phone number type and so on).

If you have an incomplete number (no country code) identifying the country is rarely possible.

    Hello,

From Germany to Australia you would dial 0011 49 followed by the German phone number (drop any initial zeros in the phone number):

    Hello Barbara,

To call or text internationally from Europe use double zero followed by the US number, country code (one) included:
    001xxx xxx xxxx

Double zero is the code used all over Europe to connect internationally.

There is an even simpler way to connect internationally from any country without worrying about this code (using the plus sign):
    +1xxx xxx xxxx

The same dialing rules would apply for calls between two US phones located in the same EU country.

    Update
It looks like this change announced for 2012 was never implemented. As of today, August 27, 2019 to dial Gabon fixed and mobile numbers from abroad one should use the following dialing format: +241 followed by 8 digits, the initial digit is zero.

A major update to this African country’s numbering plan was announced for July, 2019 and was later postponed for November. We will post these changes here.

    Hi Chaberle,

When in Peru with your US mobile phone you should dial phone numbers the way locals dial them. Peru mobile numbers comprise 9 digits and the initial digit is 9. It’s what you need to dial. To dial landlines and for more info see this page on our website:
    https://www.howtocallabroad.com/results.php?callfrom=peru&callto=peru

You can also try using the international dialing format of Peru numbers:
+51 followed by the phone number (drop any leading zero).

    Hello,
The problem with these phone number lookup websites is that they don’t really have as much data as they claim to. The ones operating in the USA do give you whatever info they have, but many phone numbers these days are mobile numbers and most of them are not listed in any public database. In other words, you should understand that there is no way for these phone lookup engines to actually provide much info about mobile numbers, and mobile phones are what most people use these days.

    Hi Laray,
    Apologies for the late reply.
You have to add a zero to the UK mobile number: 07xxxx xxxxx. You can also try using the international dialing format of the UK number, this time without the zero: 00 44 7xxxx xxxxx or +44 7xxxx xxxxx.

    Hello,

It is likely that the ring will be different when dialing your US cell phone located in Mexico. You can’t control how your phone rings – the ring sound has to do with the wireless company/network providing the service, which in this case would be Mexican.

Here’s an older thread discussing the same issue:

Double checking the area code of Leon – it seems you are using the wrong code. Leon uses 477 and not 55. So you should dial 011 52 477 followed by the 7 digit number (now you have 10 digits after 011 52).

    Hello,

When dialing to a Mexican landline you should have 10 digits after 011 52 – I understand you only have 9. Have you been able to dial this number in the past? If yes, when was the last time you dialed it?

Have you tried finding your sister online? Does she use a social network? These days it seems to be the most used way to contact someone.

in reply to: How can I find a phone number of a person in Japan #3240

    Hi Ellis,

We list phone books for most countries, but there is no residential phone book available for Japan. According to other online sources, one way to find someone’s telephone number in Japan would be to call Directory Inquiry if you know the name of that person. You would have to call 104 from inside Japan:
    https://www.thisnumber.com/jp

Another more popular way to find someone nowadays is through online search engines and social media websites, provided that the person you’re searching for uses these services.

    Hello,

Just dial the US number without adding any extra international codes – the wireless carrier will connect your call automatically.

If both mobile phones are registered in the UK you can call each other by
    using either +44 7xxx xxx xxx or 00 44 7xxx xxx xxx.
To call an Irish phone use 00 353 or +353 followed by the phone number (drop
    the initial zero).

I hope this answers your question(s).

From September 15, 2018 until June 30, 2019 all 10 digit mobile phone numbers of the format 1xx xxx xxxx will change to 9 digits. The change consists in replacing the initial 3 digits with two (different) digits:

120 xxx xxxx becomes 70 xxx xxxx

In the same way the following 3 digit prefixes have changed or are about to change:
    121 becomes 79

in reply to: whatsapp call vs skype call? #3257

I think the two services, while doing basically the same thing are very different from each other. Whatsapp is becoming pretty ubiquitous – everyone seems to have it and use it. I personally use it to communicate with friends and sometimes even for business purposes.

However, if you want to call a landline or someone who is not on whatsapp you simply can’t. With Skype, although you often have to pay a fee, you can call any phone number anywhere in the world. This is the main difference between the two services.

As for call quality, although I haven’t made a point of comparing the two services, the general opinion is that Skype requires better Internet connections and provides better call quality too. This seems rather normal since Skype has been around much longer and it is a service that caters to both businesses and individuals. Also, Skype has many more features like video conference calling, international plans, business features.

It all depends on what you’ll be using the service for. Or why not use both?
